Charles Baudelaire war der erste, der 1859 bemerkte, dass Eugène Boudin (1824–1898) in seinem Atelier „Hundreds von Pastellstudien improvisiert vor dem Meer und dem Himmel“, beschreibt sie als „die wohlhabende Magie von Luft und Wasser“. Im selben Jahr, Künstler Gustave Courbet, Malerei an seiner Seite, rief: „Mein Gott, du bist ein Seraph, Boudin! Du bist der einzige von uns, der den Himmel wirklich kennt!
