Azcue is one of the most important purist and Nazarenist of Basque painters. He studied in Madrid, Rome and Paris in the mid nineteenth century with a scholarship from the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa. On commission from the provincial government, he made a partial copy of the portrait of Queen Isabel II painted three years before by his master, Federico de Madrazo.
