Martin Van Buren venne ad Albany nel 1812 come senatore statale. Nel 1816 era avvocato generale e aveva organizzato una potente macchina politica che lo ha aiutato a diventare senatore degli Stati Uniti. Fu governatore dello Stato di New York nel 1829, dimettendosi per diventare Andrew Jackson
