Die französische Félix Emile Taunay kam 1816 in Brasilien zusammen mit anderen Mitgliedern der französischen künstlerischen Mission -- eine Gruppe, die mit dem Ziel, eine Schule für akademische Lehre der Kunst, der Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, gegründet wurde. In Rio de Janeiro porträtierte er vor allem in Zeichnungen und Aquarells die Landschaften und Architektur der Stadt. Der Künstler
