Daruma (Sánscrito: Bodhidharma) es el primer patriarca del budismo zen, que, según la leyenda, se sentó en meditación continua durante nueve años en una cueva en el norte de China. Siguiendo la tradición medieval de representaciones monocromáticas de Daruma, el maestro Zen de la secta Sōtō Fūgai Ekun creó numerosas pinturas minimalistas y poderosas como esta. El amplio espacio en blanco alberga una inscripción y sugiere un estado metafísico de la nada.
