Daruma (Sanscrito: Bodhidharma) è il primo patriarca del buddismo Zen, che, secondo la leggenda, si è seduto in meditazione continua per nove anni in una grotta nel nord della Cina. A seguito della tradizione medievale delle raffigurazioni monocromatiche di Daruma, il maestro Zen della setta Sōtō Fūgai Ekun creò numerosi dipinti minimalisti e potenti come questo. L'ampio spazio vuoto entrambi ospita un'iscrizione e suggerisce uno stato metafisico di nulla.
