La scena, ambientata in uno spazio interno con uno sfondo paesaggistico, è incentrata sul sommo sacerdote, che si avvicina a Gesù, mentre Giuseppe, la Vergine e altre figure testimoniano l'evento. Si tratta di uno schizzo o replica di una tela dipinta da Federico Barocci nel 1590 per la chiesa della Confraternita del Nome di Gesù a Pesaro, ora al Louvre.
