Bol fu allievo di Rembrandt alla fine del 1630, e seguì lo stile del suo insegnante fino alla metà del secolo. Durante il 1650 Bol è diventato stabilito nella società di Amsterdam, ha goduto di notevole successo come un ritrattista e pittore di storia, e ha adottato uno stile più colorato, fluido e fiammingo. L'elaborato cesto d'argento nell'immagine attuale appare di nuovo in un doppio ritratto del 1661 ad Anversa.
