Vor einem roten Samtvorhang sitzt eine in einem gelben Seidenkleid und einem gefütterten Mäntelchen gekleidete Frau und hält einen unbekleideten Säugling auf ihrem Schoß. Zwei weitere kleine Kinder drängen sich seitwärts a die Mutter. Era zunächst wie eine Darstellung einer Mutter und ihrer Kinder erscheint, entpuppt sich bei näherem Hinsehen als Allegorie der Caritas (Liebe, Nächstenliebe) - einer der christlichen Tugenden. Diese wurde in der Kunst Traditionell als eine Frau mit kleinen Kindern wiedergeben. Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680), in den 1630er Jahren ein Schüler Rembrandts (1606-1669), wandte sich spätestens seit den 1650er Jahren von dessen Malweise ab und schuf – wie auch in diesem Fall – elegantere Darstellungen in hellerem Kolorit. Nel dieser Zeit gehörte er zu den gefragtesten Malern Amsterdams. Sein Oeuvre umfasst hauptsächlich Historiengemälde und Porträts. Condividi su Google
