La première version principale de cette composition, pour laquelle il existe de nombreuses études et figures individuelles grandeur nature. Une version à six chiffres est dans le Kunstmuseum Solothurn, une version à quatre chiffres avec un fond rouge est dans le SkKG Winterhut (Foundation for Art, Culture and History, ancienne collection Stoll). En 1911, Hodler retouche les deux figures extérieures, en particulier celle de droite, pour laquelle sa femme avait été sititng comme modèle; l'état original est conservé sur une photographie (Ferdinand Hodler (exh. cat. Zurich/Berlin, National Gallery/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983), fig. 193).
