La prima versione principale di questa composizione, per la quale ci sono numerosi studi e figure individuali a grandezza naturale. Una versione a sei cifre è nel Kunstmuseum Solothurn, una versione a quattro cifre con sfondo rosso è nella SKKG Winterhut (Foundation for Art, Culture and History, ex Stoll Collection). Nel 1911 Hodler ritoccava le due figure esterne, soprattutto quella a destra, per cui sua moglie era stata messa in scena come modello; la condizione originale è conservata in una fotografia (Ferdinand Hodler (exh. cat. Zurigo/Berlino, National Gallery/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983), fig. 193).
