La primera versión principal de esta composición, para la cual hay numerosos estudios y figuras individuales de tamaño natural. Una versión de seis figuras está en el Kunstmuseum Solothurn, una versión de cuatro figuras con un fondo rojo está en el SKKG Winterhut (Fundación para el arte, la cultura y la historia, la antigua colección Stoll). En 1911 Hodler retocó las dos figuras exteriores, especialmente la de la derecha, para la que su esposa había sido sentitng como modelo; la condición original se conserva en una fotografía (Ferdinand Hodler (exh. cat. Zurich/Berlin, National Gallery/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983), fig. 193).
