Furono compilati da Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-88), che era un missionario della Compagnia di Gesù, che ha potenziato la propagazione del cristianesimo in Cina. Entrò in Cina nel 1659, e anche diffondere varie conoscenze dell'astronomia occidentale e della geografia.
