Obwohl Lungrens Arbeit sich vor allem auf Landschaften der Wüste Südwesten konzentriert, bemalte er auch entfernte Gipfel der Sierra und Rockies. Sitze der Mächtigen sind die östliche Seite der Colorado Rockies zwischen Trinidad und Colorado Springs. Lungren wurde in Ohio geboren. Nach einem kurzen Studium in Cincinnati zog er nach Philadelphia, wo er an der Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts unter Thomas Eakins ausgebildet. Nach seiner Ausbildung in Paris begann er seine Karriere in New York City als Magazin Illustrator, ging aber 1892 unter der Schirmherrschaft der Eisenbahn nach Westen. Danach konzentrierte er sich auf amerikanische Themen und Landschaften. Er zog 1903 nach Los Angeles und vier Jahre später fest in Santa Barbara.
