Dopo i disastri della guerra di Crimea, Florence Nightingale tornò a diventare un appassionato sostenitore per i miglioramenti nella salute dell'esercito britannico. Ha sviluppato la presentazione visiva delle informazioni, tra cui il grafico a torta, sviluppato per la prima volta da William Playfair nel 1801. Nightingale ha anche usato una grafica statistica nelle relazioni con il Parlamento, rendendosi conto che questo era il modo più efficace di portare i dati alla vita.
