Este es un retrato de la hija del propietario del artista en Southend, donde Brown se quedó en 1846. Acababa de regresar de Europa; en Basilea había admirado los retratos de Holbein y en Roma estudió el Renacimiento italiano y los pintores nazareno alemanes. Esta experiencia se refleja en la posición frontal, incluso en el modelado ligero y claro de la figura. En un momento en que el retrato infantil tendía al dulce y sentimental, Brown pintó a la niña con notable naturalidad y dirección.
