Dies ist ein Porträt der Tochter des Künstlers Vermieter in Southend, wo Brown im Jahre 1846 blieb. Er war gerade aus Europa zurückgekehrt; in Basel hatte er die Porträts von Holbein bewundert und in Rom studierte er die italienische Renaissance und die deutschen Nazarener Maler. Diese Erfahrung spiegelt sich in der frontalen Pose, sogar der hellen und klaren schattenlosen Modellierung der Figur wider. Zu einer Zeit, als Kinderportraitur neigte zum süßen und sentimentalen, Brown malte das kleine Mädchen mit bemerkenswerter Natürlichkeit und Direktheit.
