Questo è un ritratto della figlia del proprietario dell'artista a Southend, dove Brown rimase nel 1846. Era appena tornato dall'Europa; a Basilea aveva ammirato i ritratti di Holbein e a Roma studiò il Rinascimento italiano e i pittori nazareni tedeschi. Questa esperienza si riflette nella posa frontale, anche leggera e chiara modellazione senza ombra della figura. In un momento in cui il ritratto bambino tendeva al dolce e sentimentale, Brown dipinse la bambina con notevole naturalezza e direttività.
