Lo Studio segna l'inizio della mossa di Philip Guston dall'astrazione e torna alla figurazione praticata negli anni '30 e '40, mentre lavora nello stile murale WPA. Questo dipinto è ampiamente riconosciuto come un primo ritratto di meta-self, in cui Guston si presenta, lavorando al suo cavalletto che continuerà ad assumere come un motivo nelle future opere di Klansmen. Soffiando su un sigaro attraverso il suo cappuccio, il pittore tiene la mano libera per creare il suo capolavoro: un autoritratto cartone animato della sua persona incappucciata. Clement Greenberg una volta ha osservato che, con l'eccezione di Arshile Gorky, Guston era l'artista più romantico della sua generazione.
