Bourdon fue a Suecia en 1652, donde entró al servicio de la redoblable monarca Reina Christina, quien finalmente entregó política para el arte. Durante sus años en Suecia, Bourdon ejecutó sobre todo retratos, caracterizados por su elegancia y sutileza. Por lo general son desgarrados con la cara ligeramente girada, un tipo de retrato que iba a ser extremadamente influyente en la próxima generación de pintores, especialmente Le Brun y Mignard, y un conjunto de más retratos menores.
