Questo dipinto, mostrato con il suo ciondolo al Salon del 1765, si basa sul poema epico di Ludovico Ariosto Orlando Furioso (1532). Nella sua manipolazione e composizione, si tratta di un esempio di competenza di Boucher come colorista nel trattamento gioiello di un tema storico. Rappresenta Angelica, figlia pagana di un re immaginario della Cina, che ha abbandonato il cavaliere cristiano Orlando per il cavaliere Medoro, un musulmano nordafricano. Nulla del cast multiculturale trovato nel testo originale è evidente a immagine di Boucher, tuttavia, né nelle molte rappresentazioni della storia durante il XIX secolo.
