In Bouchers Seelsorge wurden der Schmutz und die Arbeit des Bauernlebens zugunsten der eleganten Kleidung und der idyllischen Romantik, die von Theater Pantomimen populär ist, beiseite gelegt. Solche spielerischen Visionen waren die Wurzeln von Marie Antoinettes Annahme von einfachem Kleid und Manieren an ihrer Freude Milch, eine Art faux-rustic Weiler, im Château de Versailles. Die Einfachheit von Bouchers Thema beruht auf der Komplexität der Komposition, die um eine Reihe von sich kreuzenden Diagonalen organisiert wird. Viel bewundert auf dem Salon von 1753, dieses Gemälde war eines von einem Paar Overdoors in das Holzwerk von Madame de Pompadours Château de Bellevue gesetzt.
