Al Salon del 1765, Boucher espose questo dipinto con altri tre per formare la narrazione di una semplice storia d'amore: un secondo dipinto raffigurava l'arrivo della colomba portando una lettera d'amore, un terzo mostrò una pastoressa che leggeva la lettera aloud al suo confidente, e il quarto raffigurava gli amanti infine incontro. Denis Diderot, spesso critico di Boucher, loda i quattro dipinti come "un piccolo poema affascinante", ma condanna la falsità del genere pastorale, paragonandolo alla vita di campagna come rappresentata nell'opera francese.
