Gemalt kurz nach Bouchers Rückkehr nach Paris nach einigen Jahren in Italien, setzt diese frühe Arbeit die Tradition des Capriccio fort, eine fantasievolle Darstellung von Künstlern wie Benedetto Castiglione Pionier und oft inspiriert von der rustikalen Landschaft um Rom. Dieser Blick stammt aus dem Campo Vaccino, benannt nach den dort geweihten Kühen; auf dem Palatin-Hügel hat Boucher den Palast von Caligula und Tiberius und die zerstörten sechzehnten Jahrhundert Gärten der Familie Farnese dargestellt. Er kopierte die Figuren im Vordergrund direkt aus Zeichnungen von Abraham Bloemaert, ihm vertraut durch einen Lehrer in Rom, der Boucher auch im Jahre 1735 geätzt und veröffentlichte.
