Disguise è stato spesso usato da ritrattisti alla moda come Drouais. Permise ai sitter di trasmettere ulteriori strati di informazioni su se stessi attraverso riferimento al mito e alla storia antica. Tradizionalmente, le vergini Vestali erano antiche donne romane dedicate a Vesta, dea del focolare, alleate qui nel braciere su cui potrebbero essere fatte offerte.
