Re Luigi Le figlie di XV, conosciute collettivamente come Mesdames de France, stabilirono un importante enclave di patronato a Versailles e furono particolarmente sostenitrici dei ritrattisti Drouais, Jean Marc Nattier e Adélaïde Labille-Guiard. Questo ritratto di Sophie de France, la sesta di queste otto figlie, fu il primo in una serie di Drouais nei primi anni 1760. Il suo vestito elaborato comprende un muff di pelliccia e un'abbondanza di fiori artificiali che sembrano prendere il tessuto, brocca floreale del suo corpetto in tre dimensioni.
