Francesco di Giorgio fu scultore senese, pittore, illuminatore, architetto e ingegnere militare. La funzione precisa di questo disegno è incerta; può registrare un'idea per una scultura di tomba o forse un dipinto. La prospettiva architettonica anteriore e lo sguardo verso il basso delle figure suggeriscono che il lavoro era destinato ad essere posto alto sulla parete di una cappella o navata. La figura maschile al centro, affiancata da musi o figure che rappresentano le arti liberali, può ritrarre il patrono, suggerendo una funzione commemorativa. In alternativa, questo foglio vellum può essere servito come frontispiece per il trattato di Francesco di Giorgio sulle macchine, in tal caso, la figura maschile può essere un autoritratto dell’artista.
