Secondo il Vangelo di Luca, un avvocato, invitato da Gesù ad amare il prossimo come se stesso, ha posto la domanda: “E chi è il mio prossimo”? Gesù rispose con la parabola del buon samaritano: un uomo che viaggia da Gerusalemme a Gerico fu attaccato da briganti che lo lasciarono mezzo morto sul lato della strada. Un sacerdote e un Levito – un membro della tribù ebraica che ha ottenuto il suo nome da Levi, il terzo figlio di Giacobbe aveva con Leah – è passato in quel modo ma lo ha evitato. Lungo venne un samaritano, tradizionalmente disprezzato dagli ebrei, che, dopo aver lavato e trattato le sue ferite, lo portò in una locanda e lasciò la locanda due denarii per prendersi cura dell'uomo ferito. Nel dipinto, il pellegrino si trova ferito al centro, tenuto dal samaritano. Sullo sfondo si può vedere il sacerdote e il Levito che se ne va.
