Il grande collezionista rinascimentale Isabella d’Este, marchio di Mantova, commissionò a questo ritratto del figlio Federico Gonzaga di consolarla dopo essere stato portato alla corte papale di Roma come ostaggio. La Francia lo ha basato su schizzi che ha fatto dell'erede di dieci anni come è stato scortato attraverso Bologna sulla sua strada per arrendersi. Il dipinto, completato in soli dodici giorni, cattura un giovane alla moda con uno sguardo gentile e guance rosee che sembrano destinate a trasmettere purezza e dolcezza. Le lettere rivelano che sebbene Isabella fosse soddisfatta del lavoro della Francia, il potente matriarca pensò che i capelli di Federico fossero troppo biondi e lo rispedissero in modo che l’artista potesse oscurarlo.
