Guardi, bekannt für Landschaften und imaginäre Stadtansichten, bemalte auch ein paar Innenräume, darunter dieses Bild, das venezianische Beamte und Petitioner außerhalb der Hauptratskammer des Dogenpalasts darstellt. Obwohl er seinen Blick teleskopiert hat, um die Szene aufzunehmen, ist der Raum ansonsten genau dargestellt. Guardi kombinierte dieses Gemälde mit einem der Ridotto Pubblico, auch in der Met Sammlung.
