Acquistato dai sovrani d'Italia nel 1883 a Roma all'Esposizione delle Belle Arti per le collezioni Savoia, è stato assegnato alla Villa Reale di Monza. Nel 1915 fu trasferito al Palazzo Quirinale. La grande tela del soggetto del Risorgimento - come indica il titolo alternativo Il ritorno del conscritto - è dominato da una luminosità riverberante creata dall'immensa luce blu dello sfondo. L'opera, per la quale Lojacono ebbe l'onore di comandante della Corona d'Italia fu molto apprezzata dai critici, tanto che vennecoined l'epiteto di
