Maffei vivió y trabajó en las ciudades italianas de Vicenza y Padua, pero fue profundamente influenciado por la pintura veneciana. En su más característica, su elegante visión se ve en los tipos de figuras alargadas y cepillos sueltos vistos en esta pintura sobre la puerta. Esta escena del libro bíblico del Génesis muestra al ángel apareciendo a Agar, una mujer esclavizada en Egipto. Desterrado con su hijo Ismael al desierto por su nuevo esposo, Abraham, Hagar fue supuestamente salvado por una criatura celestial que la dirigió a una fuente de agua.
