Maffei visse e lavorò nelle città italiane di Vicenza e Padova, ma fu profondamente influenzata dalla pittura veneziana. Nella sua più caratteristica, la sua visione elegante si avvicina ai tipi di figure allungate e pennellate sciolte viste in questo dipinto sopra la porta. Questa scena del libro biblico della Genesi mostra l'angelo che appare ad Hagar, una donna schiavizzata in Egitto. Banished con il suo bambino Ishmael al deserto da suo nuovo marito, Abraham, Hagar è stato presumibilmente salvato da una creatura celeste che l'ha diretta ad una sorgente d'acqua.
