Don Pedro de Alcántara Téllez-Girón y Pacheco (1755–1807), nono Duque de Osuna, fu uno dei nobili più ricchi e talentuosi della Spagna durante i regni di Carlo III e Carlo IV. Un mecenate entusiasta e illuminato delle arti e delle scienze, il Duca sembra in questo ritratto per esporre la personalità reattiva e acuta che lo ha reso una figura popolare con l'intelligenza del suo giorno. Dopo la corte reale, lui e sua moglie erano i patroni più fedeli di Goya, commissionando più di ventiquattro opere tra cui ritratti, soggetti religiosi, e una famosa serie di tele decorative per il loro palazzo di campagna fuori Madrid.
