Specializzato in soggetti religiosi, Francisco de Zurbarán divenne uno dei pittori più grandi del XVII secolo. In questa grande tela, l'artista mostra un gruppo di pastori che visitano il neonato Gesù. Accompagnati da Maria e Giuseppe, tutti si chiudono in riverenza verso il bambino. Questo tipo di immagini devote esemplificò la religiosità della Controriforma. Zurbarán ha creato immagini simili dello stesso tema, ma la qualità di questo particolare dipinto suggerisce che non è stato fatto dall'artista stesso ma qualcuno legato al suo laboratorio.
