1627, während noch in Llerena, Zurbarán malte dieses spektakuläre Bild, das ihn berühmt machte, für die Dominikaner. Es wurde in einer kleinen Kapelle platziert und machte einen starken Eindruck. Das dargestellte Drama in der Komposition wird durch das übermächtige Licht erhöht, das dann das Reale in Superreal verwandelt und damit die duale Natur Christi zum Ausdruck bringt.
