Questo dipinto faceva parte di una serie di Zurbarán che rappresentava i tredici fondatori di ordini monastici, oggi noti da copie nel convento dei Cappuccini a Castellón de la Plana. Durante il 1630, il suo laboratorio produsse almeno altre due copie per servire le missioni evangelizzatrici nelle Americhe: una serie andò a Lima e un'altra a Città del Messico. San Benedetto è raffigurato tenendo un vaso di vino — in particolare un esempio spagnolo contemporaneo fatto nel quartiere di Triana a Siviglia — in riferimento a una leggenda che un vaso di vino avvelenato è stato fratturato quando benedetto dal santo, salvandolo così. Benedetto riappare pregando nel paesaggio roccioso.
