La storia del vecchio pastore Battus, che, avendo assistito al furto di Mercurio di una mandria di bestiame, ha promesso di non rivelare il segreto, è raccontata nelle Metamorfosi di Ovid (II: 668 ss.). Quando è stato testato dal dio, mostrato qui nella veste di un giovane pastore, ha indicato ai piedi della montagna dove il bestiame era nascosto. Mercurio lo trasformò in una pietra. L'immagine fu attribuita a Poussin. La sua autorevolezza è stabilita da un incisione che porta il nome di Millet.
