Peeckelhaering - Pickelherring nella tradizione inglese - è un personaggio stock trovato nel teatro comico della maggior parte dei paesi europei. Con una tazza o una tankard nella mano sinistra, l'uomo guarda indietro allo spettatore, la sua testa inclinata e la sua espressione un po' woozy, un'evocazione umoristica del vizio di intemperanza. Il trucco scuro sul volto indica che il pittore sta raffigurando un attore nel ruolo di Peeckelhaering, e il rosso e il giallo del costume era in realtà dal XVI secolo è stato associato con la jester.
