Peeckelhaering - Pickelherring in der englischen Tradition - ist ein Stock-Charakter im Comic-Theater der meisten europäischen Länder. Mit einem Becher oder Tanker in seiner linken Hand blickt der Mann auf den Betrachter zurück, sein Kopf geneigt und sein Ausdruck ein wenig faul, eine humorvolle Evokation des Lasters der Intemperanz. Das dunkle Make-up auf dem Gesicht zeigt, dass der Maler einen Schauspieler in der Rolle von Peeckelhaering darstellt, und das rote und gelbe des Kostüms war in der Tat seit dem 16. Jahrhundert mit dem Jester verbunden.
