Ispirato da pittori Caravaggeschi olandesi come Gerrit van Honthorst e Hendrick ter Brugghen, Hals dipinse immagini di musicisti spensierati durante la metà del 1620. Qui un giovane versa un'ultima goccia di vino rosso sulla sua miniatura, un segnale all'oste che ha bisogno di una ricarica, e allo spettatore che (secondo una rima olandese del periodo) "Il vetro è vuoto. Il tempo è finito." Mentre l'autore di Hals non può essere dubitato, l'aspetto dell'immagine è stato influenzato dai cambiamenti fatti dall'artista stesso e dai restauratori successivi. Ad esempio, il collare sulla camicia e la stringa lute che attraversa il pollice (così oscurando il significato del gesto) non sono originali.
