La tecnica di questo ritratto risalente alla maturità precoce di Hals è appresa in parte da Rubens. Gli emitoni sono sovrapposti in ictus incisi sopra il pigmento più leggero applicato in un rivestimento sottile e fluido. Lo schema di colori caldo ma ristretto e l'espressione animata del soggetto e l'aria autoconfidente sono tipici delle opere principali di Hals di questo periodo. Il matchmaking tra i ritratti maschili e femminili è una ricerca popolare tra gli studiosi Hals, che a volte accoppia il ritratto di Frick con un ritratto femminile del 1633 nella Washington National Gallery.
