Situato prima di un semplice sfondo, Frans van Mieris si dipinse con un sorriso sul volto, come se sorpreso di vedere lo spettatore. Anche se il doppio mento del pittore e i caratteristici moustache e capelli ricci sono riconoscibili in questo piccolo pannello ovale, il dipinto è stato concepito come una tronie, o studio di carattere, in cui Van Mieris ha usato le sue caratteristiche per creare un'immagine inventiva e forse comica.
