Lo studio fotografico di Franz Xaver Setzer fu uno degli indirizzi più famosi di Vienna intorno al 1920 (Hofstallstraße, ora Museumstraße). Prese ritratti di personalità di circoli sociali, artisti importanti come Stefan Zweig e Arthur Schnitzler e musicisti che passavano in transito, tra cui Giacomo Puccini e Maurice Ravel. Arnold Schönberg visitò lo studio con il suo allievo Alban Berg nel febbraio/marzo 1922. Tuttavia, non sono stati fotografati insieme; sappiamo che sono andati insieme da un ingresso nella lista di targhe fotografiche (che sopravvive ancora oggi, insieme con l'attrezzatura completa dello studio e negativi targa). Schönberg era molto soddisfatto dei suoi ritratti: “Caro signor Setzer, il mio più sincero ringraziamento per le fotografie. Sono molto bene e sarò completamente soddisfatto se riesco a guardare bene come queste immagini, che sono interamente adatte come paragoni.” (Arnold Schönberg a Franz Xaver Setzer, 16 marzo 1923)
