Il tema dei primi passi di un bambino è stato un soggetto popolare di dipinti di genere negli anni incerti dopo la Rivoluzione francese, a causa in gran parte del suo messaggio rassicurante di continuità. Catel, che ha studiato presso l'École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi, avrebbe anche avuto familiarità con la relativa allegoria dell'Età dell'Uomo, soggetto di un grande Salon dipinto di François Gérard (1808; Musée Condé, Chantilly). L’opera attuale condivide l’ambientazione italiana di Gérard ma aggiorna il suo vestito antico raffigurante una famiglia contadina contemporanea.
