Munch aveva un passato familiare problematico. Oltre al padre pietista, sua madre morì di tubercolosi quando era piccolo, e sua sorella morì nove anni dopo della stessa malattia. Questo dipinto è un'immagine della sorella più vecchia e preferita di Munch Sophie che si trova a letto, morire di tubercolosi quando aveva 15 anni. Munch creò molte riproduzioni di questo dipinto, tra cui una che si tenne a Dresda, in Germania. Negli anni '30 e '40, l'arte di Munch considerata "arte degenerata" e rimosso tutti loro dalla Germania per essere venduti all'asta. Questo pezzo è stato acquistato e successivamente donato alla Tate Gallery di Londra, dove rimane oggi.
