Il titolo di questo dipinto si riferisce all'epica medievale di Dante Alighieri di un viaggio attraverso l'inferno. Anche se Stuck impiegava simboli tradizionali del mondo sotterraneo — un serpente, un demone e una fossa fiammeggiante — i colori dissonanti e le pose stilizzate, esagerate sono sorprendentemente moderni. Ha progettato il telaio complementare. Le immagini di Stuck furono probabilmente ispirate da The Gates of Hell di Auguste Rodin, in particolare dalla figura di The Thinker (vedi opere correlate nelle vicinanze). Quando Inferno debuttò in una mostra d'arte tedesca contemporanea al Met nel 1909, i critici lodarono la sua "brucialità straniera". L'immagine ha rafforzato la reputazione di Stuck come artista visionario senza paura di esplorare il lato oscuro della psiche.
