Nach 1900 produzierte Remington eine evokative Reihe von Nocturnes, die Dunkelheit als wesentliches narratives Element aufweisen. In einer gedämpften Palette von blau, grün und braun, zeigt eine Renaissance drei Kavalleriesoldaten und ihre Pferde in einer schneebedeckten Landschaft. Ein Beamter und Pfadfinder haben sich auf einen Bergkrest gewagt, um eine entfernte Baumlinie zu vermessen, wachsam auf die Möglichkeit der Konfrontation. Durch das Verdrehen der Figuren vom Betrachter schafft Remington eine Aura des stimmungsvollen Geheimnisses und erhöht die Spannung eines unsicheren Ergebnisses.
