Dopo il 1900 Remington produsse una suggestiva serie di nocturni che caratterizzano l'oscurità come elemento narrativo essenziale. Realizzata in una tavolozza muta di blu, verde e marrone, A Reconnaissance raffigura tre soldati di cavalleria e i loro cavalli in un paesaggio illuminato di neve. Un ufficiale e un esploratore si sono avventurati verso una collina per sondare una lontana linea di alberi, avvisare la possibilità di confronto. Togliendo le figure dallo spettatore, Remington crea un'aura di mistero lunatico e migliora la suspense di un risultato incerto.
