Nel 1895 l’amico di Remington, lo scrittore di Filadelfia Owen Wister, pubblicò un articolo in Harper’s Monthly intitolato “The Evolution of the Cow-Puncher”. Un certo numero di illustrazioni, tra cui questo dipinto, ha accompagnato l'articolo. Remington aveva consigliato a Wister di scrivere sul passaggio del cowboy, per le gamme aperte dove “ha letteralmente combattuto il suo diritto di strada” non erano più. “Non sbagliare i giovani simpatici che ambiscono intorno recinzioni di filo per il pilota selvaggio delle Pianure,” ha avvertito. Il passaggio del cowboy open-range è pianto in questo dipinto, che è infuso con i ritmi lenti e toni umidi di un'elegia. L'immagine mitica del cowboy doveva essere ulteriormente immortalata sette anni dopo con la pubblicazione dell'influente romanzo di Wister The Virginian.
